Spot Description
The original site of Tianjing Pavilion was destroyed by quarriers, making it impossible to rebuild the magnificent Tianjing Pavilion. The present structure is the small and exquisite Taizi Pavilion.
The Taizi Pavilion has two floors, both of which house sculptures of the Sakyamuni Prince. The pavilion is situated south of Erhai Lake, facing north towards Guanyin Pavilion. The upper floor has an open window at the front to facilitate those praying for a son to "beat the prince". There is a couplet by the window that reads: "Come, come, come, quickly beat my golden sparrow; Go, go, go, quickly embrace your golden boy." The lower floor is mainly for prayer and incense offerings. A couplet by the door reads: "Ancient Buddha comprehends the past causes, ten lifetimes of emptiness and form; Small river contains the moon's shadow, hundreds of flowers bloom with brilliant articles."
The eighth day of the fourth month is said to be the birthday of Sakyamuni, known as "Buddha's Birthday" and also "Prince's Meeting". On this day each year, the vegetarian nuns of the Lianchi Society go to Taizi Pavilion to chant scriptures, prepare vegetarian offerings, and perform the "prince's urine" ritual.
According to folklore in the Bai ethnic region, the Buddha descended to earth, reincarnated as a nineteen-year-old peasant girl. This peasant girl was extremely beautiful, diligent, and gentle. Every morning, she would go to an ancient well in front of the village to fetch water. One morning, when she arrived at the well, she suddenly felt unbearably thirsty and scooped up a ladle of well water to drink. This water tasted exceptionally sweet, and after drinking it, she felt very refreshed and energetic, quite different from her usual experience of quenching thirst. She felt an indescribable sense of joy. Unexpectedly, after a few months, her belly began to grow larger. Her parents questioned her, but she couldn't explain it. Feeling ashamed, her parents drove her out of the house. The girl, feeling wronged and desperate, became thirsty again and went back to the ancient well. As soon as she reached the well, her stomach suddenly ached. She left the well and struggled to walk to a night-blooming jasmine tree in front of the mountain. At that moment, a phoenix flew down from the sky. Instantly, colorful clouds and purple mist surrounded the night-blooming jasmine tree. The girl gave birth to a boy under the tree. This boy was handsome, with clear eyebrows, wide forehead, and large ears. He was eventually sent to the palace and later made a prince. It is said that the Buddha was reincarnated ten times as a prince, hence the origin of the Taizi Pavilion.
In the traditional Prince's Festival, the Bai ethnic region has a custom of "drinking the prince's urine." The ritual involves first chanting scriptures and offering vegetarian food, then washing the entire body of the prince (mostly a copper or copper alloy statue), and using red sugar water boiled with sandalwood and dates, filtered through a night-blooming jasmine branch, poured into the "prince's golden body" from the top. The liquid flows out from the prince's "golden sparrow" and is collected in clean containers to be shared among those present. Some people also take it home for their children to drink. It is said that drinking the "prince's urine" can ward off evil spirits, bring good fortune, and increase wisdom.
